Welcome to Merlin Class

Welcome to our Year 4 class, Merlin.

Your class teacher in Year 4 is Miss Turrell. Our teaching assistants are Miss Miller and Mrs Staples.

In our classroom it is so important that we have respect, resilience and most importantly have fun learning!

Weekly Home Learning

Children will be set their home learning that corresponds with their current maths and spelling focus. All home learning will be handed out on a Friday in their home learning books. Children need to return their homework by the following Thursday. Please ensure that your child shows pride in their presentation - this is a quality they should adhere to throughout their home learning, in line with the expectations of the school.

Maths - This will take the form of deepening understanding activities based upon your child's learning objectives from that week. In addition, please remember that the key skills of mathematics should also be practiced at home including times tables up to 12X12. Your child has a log in for TT Rockstars and this should be accessed as regularly as possible. Children will be tested at regular intervals on their times tables.

Spelling - The children will be given a spelling grid at the start of each half term. This details the spellings that the children are expected to learn each week as well as the spelling rule that is the focus. Spellings should be practiced in accordance with their weekly spelling homework.

Reading - As part of their homework, we would like you to encourage you child to read independently at home. As they are in Year 4, please try to encourage them to read for around 20 minutes, 3 times a week.

PE

Tuesday and Friday afternoons.

Merlin Class will have two lessons of PE a week. The first will be on a Tuesday. They will need to come to school dressed in their PE kit on this day. Where possible, PE will be outdoors during the first half term. Please ensure your child is dressed accordingly. Long hair needs to be tied back and earrings should be removed for health and safety reasons. If your child is unable to take part in PE due to an injury, please contact the office.

On Friday afternoons, your child will have their swimming lessons. They will need to bring a bag to school that day with a towel and their swimming clothes. Again long hair will need to be tied up and any earrings will need to be removed.

In Autumn term 1, Merlin Class will be learning about our region and the South Aegean, Greece. This will be followed by coastal erosion in Autumn term 2. Linking to this, in our English lessons we will be reading a book called 'Oliver and the Seawigs' by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre. Following this we will be reading the book 'Stitch Head' by Guy Bass.

In maths, we will be deepening our understanding of place value and addition and subtraction.

In PE, pupils will be taking swimming lessons and developing their basketball skills.

Please see the curriculum overview and plans below for more information on what Merlin Class will be learning this half-term.
