Welcome to Eagle Class!

This is the home of our Year 5 and Year 6 children.

Our class teacher is Miss Blastland and our teaching assistants are Miss Sharpe and Mrs Cardy.

In Eagle Class, we strive to build unique, independent, self-motivated and increasingly mature learners, who spend the school day happy! Our classroom is built upon respect, ambition, collaboration and resilience but most of all nurturing a deep love of learning.

"The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence." - Maria Montessori

Home Learning

In Eagle Class, we believe homework is essential in developing the important skills of independent learning whilst reinforcing and extending classroom learning. It helps children to develop a clear sense of responsibility and a work ethic that will benefit them beyond the classroom. Homework is of increased importance, especially in Year 6 as your child prepares for the demands of secondary school homework. For parents in upper Key Stage 2, the most important thing is to continue to help where possible with reading, homework and times tables, whilst stepping back just a little more than in previous years. Your child will learn during this year, possibly more than any other, that it is their own hard work and effort that matters, not someone else’s, and we will be aiming to help them develop their independence, organisation and self-motivation in time for the increased demands of secondary school — a tricky thing for both parents and teachers!

Homework is given out every week on a Friday and is due in every Thursday. Spelling homework for the entirety of the half-term will be given at the start of each half-term to allow children the flexibility to complete more than one a week, if they should choose to do so. Maths homework will be given on a weekly basis and should be handed in by the following Thursday. Children should complete a maths activity, spelling practice and independent reading (at least 3x) every week.

Keep on reading

As ever, it is still important that your child continues to read, both alone and to you, as much as possible. It is never too late to develop a love of reading. Spend time finding the best books for your child.  Your child’s reading will be monitored daily, and the number of reads counted - remember there are rewards on offer for reaching milestones.

PE

Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon

PE lessons will take place every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Please ensure that all items of clothing, especially sweatshirts, are clearly labelled. Long hair should be tied back. Earrings should be removed, for health and safety. If your child is unable to take part in PE, please contact the school office. Children should come to school in PE kit, on PE days. For this term children need to have available an outdoor PE kit including trainers.

"The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease for ever to be able to do it.” - J.M. Barrie.

During Autumn One, Eagle Class are engaging with a Geography theme, where we will be conducting an in-depth study into the economic activity of the United Kingdom. Children will learn about the three main economic sectors and how each of them impacts the economy of the UK. Using a range of case studies, children will find out how sustainable different economic activities in the UK are and the ramifications they have on the environment.

During Autumn Two, Eagle Class are exploring a topic on rivers! Children will learn about the features of a river at each course and the specific features that can form. Using the River Trent as a case study, children will study the features of rivers in context. Children will then learn to conduct fieldwork at their local river by gathering, recording, analysing and presenting data.

The book we will be reading in Autumn Term is Holes by Louis Sachar. This is a firm favourite with Miss Blastland, who has enjoyed reading this over the summer and is excited to enjoy this with the children. Children are welcome to bring their own copy into class with them!

Over the course of the Autumn term, in maths pupils will be studying place value, addition and subtraction, fractions, measurement and ratio.

In PE, pupils will be improving their skills in tennis, netball and indoor athletics. In addition to this, they will be taught the new skills required for handball.

Pupils will be studying French as their modern language for Autumn 1 before moving on to study music in Autumn 2.
