Why we Study French (Modern Foreign Languages)
Learning a foreign language is a powerful way to broaden children’s understanding of the world and develop essential communication skills. At Enfield, we believe that studying French helps to foster curiosity, respect and appreciation for different cultures, communities and ways of life. Language learning not only supports speaking and listening skills, but also enhances memory, problem-solving and confidence.
French provides children with the opportunity to express themselves in a new way, building resilience as they practise unfamiliar vocabulary and sentence structures. It also strengthens their understanding of English grammar through comparison and helps prepare them for further language study at secondary school. Through learning French, children begin to develop into global citizens with an awareness of diversity and cultural richness.
How we Study French
French is taught across Key Stage 2 using the Language Angels scheme of work, with lessons taking place every other half term. This approach ensures regular exposure to the language while allowing time for knowledge to be revisited and embedded.
The Language Angels programme provides a carefully structured and progressive curriculum, enabling pupils to build on prior knowledge as they move through Key Stage 2. Lessons focus on developing skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, alongside building a solid foundation in key vocabulary and grammar.
Pupils learn through a variety of engaging activities, including songs, games, role-play, storytelling and interactive tasks. Units are organised around topics such as greetings, numbers, animals, food and the wider world, helping children to make meaningful connections. Where possible, links are made with other areas of learning, such as geography and culture, to enrich understanding.
The scheme supports progression through three key stages: Early Language, Intermediate and Progressive units, ensuring that all pupils can develop confidence and competence in French at an appropriate level.
What is Special About French in Our School
At Enfield, we are proud to provide a broad and engaging French curriculum that inspires children to develop a love of language learning. Through the use of the Language Angels scheme, we ensure consistency, progression and high-quality teaching across Key Stage 2.
We place a strong emphasis on building children’s confidence in speaking and listening, encouraging them to take risks and enjoy communicating in French. Cultural understanding is also an important part of our provision, with opportunities to explore French traditions, festivals and customs.
Our approach supports all learners to feel successful, regardless of their starting point, and helps to build positive attitudes towards languages. By the time pupils leave Year 6, they have developed a strong foundation in French, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed for the next stage of their education.
We continue to look for ways to make language learning engaging and relevant, fostering curiosity and enthusiasm that will stay with pupils beyond primary school.
